i also don’t understand how saying that a guy who owns slaves is not extending his beliefs of freedom and liberty onto them is ‘distracting from the subject.’ I’d say that’s dead on why they made the exhibition.
I went to Monticello a few years ago… probably 3 or 4 and the guide STILL wouldn’t talk about Jefferson in the context of slavery. Mentioned Sally Hemmings’ descendents as rumored to be related, ‘but we’ll never know for sure.’ Implying the DNA evidence wasn’t proof that Jefferson had offspring with a slave.
Founding father, yes. Slave owner, yes. Hypocritical, clearly. Whether it was an issue that he struggled with or not, by definition he owned slaves.
